In July 2023, Huawei released the first new high-power, ultra-wideband wireless product RRU5517t in Cambodia. This RRU (Remote Radio Unit) combines triple bands into one module to save more than 60% of site equipment space. In addition, the high integration of natural air-cooling system and true wideband support dynamic power sharing, reducing energy consumption by about 30%, helping operators to improve network quality and to reduce OPEX.

With the development of user requirement and technology, operators’ frequency spectrum and network complexity continue to increase, and more equipment need to be added to towers. However, most towers have space and load-bearing capacity limitations, making it difficult to install new equipment. In the traditional solution, if operator need to deploy three frequency bands (1.8 GHz, 2.1 GHz, and 2.6 GHz), one RRU is required for each frequency band. Huawei’s first triple-band 4T4R (4 Transmit 4 Receive) RRU uses ultra-wideband radio frequency and power amplifier algorithm innovations. Provides the 1.8 GHz+2.1 GHz+2.6 GHz triple-band integration, meeting the requirements for simplified deployment of all bands and RATs.

Triple-band co-deployment reduces antenna space by more than 60%, total weight of RRUs is reduced by 48%, and energy consumption is reduced by about 30%.

According to the commercial use cases of European operators, ultra-wideband RRUs bring the following benefits:

  • Simplified site: Huawei ultra-wideband RRUs support triple-band integration. According to commercial cases, two RRUs are deployed for two frequency bands before reconstruction. After the reconstruction, only one RRU module is required for the three frequency bands, greatly simplifying the site.
  • High efficiency and energy saving: Huawei ultra-wideband RRU is true wideband RRU. It combines the PAs of the three frequency bands into a resource pool, and implements power sharing among the three frequency bands at TTI (Transmission Time Interval) level. Compared with three single-band RRUs, the power consumption of ultra-wideband RRUs can be reduced by 30% in ideal scenarios.
  • Better user experience: With the increase of network spectrum, ultra-wideband RRUs and Huawei’s unique SingleCell algorithm can effectively coordinate the load of low band and middle band carriers, migrate traffic from the cell center to middle band carriers. Low band carriers are dedicated to serving cell edge users. This feature increases the data speed of cell edge user  by 80% and increases the overall network capacity by 25%.

At the launch event, Mr. Tang Zhengsheng, director of wireless solution sales of Huawei Cambodia, said: “Huawei’s high-power ultra-wideband RRU5517t will be commercially deployed in Cambodia in Q3 2023. This will greatly help Cambodian operators reduce antenna space and energy consumption, improve network quality, and accelerate business success. This is the first large-scale commercial use of this new product in the Asia-Pacific region.”
