May 27th 2023 – Shenzhen, China: At the 2022–2023 Huawei ICT Competition Global final, the first generation of ICT students from the top universities in Cambodia achieved third place in the Network track. The three young talents participated in the final round against other excellent ICT students from across the world for the first time in the history of the Cambodian team. Two males and one female from two of Cambodia’s leading colleges make up the team. They came from the Royal University of Phnom Penh and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
The competition marks its 7th session this year, and for the first-time after the pandemic, competitors from around the region are able to travel to China and compete in face to face since the epidemic. 147 teams from 36 countries and regions participated in this year’s global finals in Shenzhen after winning their respective national and regional competitions. It showcased how ICT talent skills development is valued in the Asia Pacific Region. The competition concluded with exciting results that universities from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam were all prizewinners in categories covering three tracks including Network; Cloud and Innovation.
This year, the practical session consists of three paths, network, cloud and computing which examine the students’ theoretical knowledge, practical ICT skills and tests their ability to work as a team. The innovation competition requires students to start with the real needs encountered in their lives to propose solutions with tangible social benefits and commercial value. They are required to employ artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, Big Data, cloud and mobile Internet technologies to design and complete models with full functionality.

Closing Ceremony and Award Ceremony of Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 Global Finals
At the Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 Final Closing & Awarding Ceremony, Xiao Haijun, President of Huawei Enterprise Business Global Partner Development and Sales Dept, addressed the finalists saying “Digital talent and skills will become the foundation for the development of the digital economy. By the end of 2022, Huawei ICT Academies had partnered with more than 2200 colleges and universities, training more than 200,000 students annually. In the future, Huawei will bring ICT education resources to more schools around the world. By 2026, Huawei hopes to build Huawei ICT Academies with 7,000 universities and train more than 1 million students annually. Broadly enhance students’ digital literacy and skills to build a vibrant and inclusive digital world.”

UNESCO Assistant Director-General Stephania Giannini added her support and emphasized the need to develop digital skills. She explained “UNESCO strongly supports Huawei’s work in the education industry and hopes to improve global connectivity and digital skills.” Qin Changwei, Secretary-General of the National Commission for Education and UNESCO, said that “The Huawei ICT Competition has now achieved global recognition and is a powerful measure to promote equity in education and mutual learning of science and technology civilizations. The Women’s Honorary Award and Digital Inclusion Award specially set up in the competition have made a good example of promoting gender equality and digital inclusion.
In his address 2007 Nobel Prize Winner and Development Economist Professor Mohan Munasinghe talked about the need to nurture talent and encourage innovation through sharing ideas to foster a multi-polar world.
Zhan Tao, Director of UNESCO’s Institute of Educational Information Technology, praised Huawei’s contribution to the education and sustainable development of human society. “Huawei provides open platforms and resources to benefit people around the world through the ICT talent strategy and Huawei’s ICT Academy program. Through the Huawei ICT Contest, Huawei has set an example in connection and innovation. In the future, we hope that the Contest will play a greater role in leading global cooperation and achieving technological innovation.”
The Asia-Pacific region is a thriving hub of the digital economy, but it has also witnessed a widening gap in ICT talent. To address this issue, Huawei launched Huawei ICT Competition with the theme of “Connection, Glory, and Future”.
Moreover, via its ICT Academy and ICT Competition, Huawei has currently formed partnerships with 290 universities and nurtured over 51,000 digital talents in Asia-Pacific. The Asia Pacific regional competition attracted more than 4,800 Huawei ICT Academy students as well as teachers from 290 leading universities and colleges from 10 countries.
ICT Academy
In 2013, Huawei launched its ICT Academy program, a cooperation project between Huawei as an enterprise and the universities, to help drive the talent ecosystem.
With the ICT Academy program, Huawei helps the universities improve their capacity in providing digital technology training so that they can certify students as ICT talents. In this way, it helps provide the talent needed for the digital industry development. Most students pass certification exams after completing related courses.
By December of 2022, Huawei has partnered with over 2200 universities and colleges. More than 200,000 students are trained every year. In addition, Huawei and its partners joined held 51 talent fairs around the world. Huawei aims to target over 7,000 ICT academies and train over 1 million students per year by 2026
After years of development, Huawei ICT Competition has continuously increased its visibility and influence around the world. Huawei ICT Competition has not only been officially included in the list of national college student competitions by the China Institute of Higher Education, but also won many national leadership platforms around the world. Huawei hopes to help universities innovate and start businesses through the ICT Competition and cultivate the ICT talent that the industry needs.
