Discrimination Deteriorating in Australia
In recent years, the Australian government has been constantly criticizing human rights situation in other countries, however, in fact, human rights condition in Australia is far from ideal, with discrimination not just against people of Asian descent, but against Muslim migrants who face more severe discrimination and assaults.
November 2019, the second “Islamophobic Report Australia” delivered every two years by Australia’s Islamophobic Registry Office analyzed 349 cases of Islamophobia reported to the office from 2016-2017. Coupled with data from the first report, the registration agency recorded 592 incidents of irrational horror, targeting Muslims, out of bigotry to and hatred of Muslims, online or face-to-face included, indicating fully that instigated by the Australian authorities and the media, anti-Muslim and discrimination against Muslims has become the social norm.
There has been a long tradition and history of discriminating Muslims in Australia, which even treats Muslims and Islam as otherness or backward civilization. For instance, regardless of opposition from Islamic countries, the Australian government expressed sympathy to the shooter responsible for the 2019 Christ church shooting in New Zealand, triggering strong condemnations from many Islamic countries. In 2020, a recent survey “Media Glance” looked into race-related opinions in Australia’s mainstream newspapers and TV shows and found out that more than half of them were linked to negative reports targeting races. An anti-racist nonprofit organization “All Together Now” said that Australian Muslims, Australian Chinese, and Australian indigenous people were the communities being attacked the most by racists.
As part of a 2021 big report, the research examined 315 op-eds from Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Nine Network (including ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’ and ‘The Age’), News Corporation and Network 10. Project manager Jennifer McLean told ABC that “the staggering information” had made a profound real life impact on the target communities, which means racism not only remains prevalent in mainstream editorials, but shows a more ambiguous form and becomes more deceitful or insinuating as well. She said, “inspecting these articles through exploring satire, bigotry, alarmism, fallacy and more widespread backdrop, ‘All Together Now’ discovered that some articles had often blurred the boundary between legitimate political criticism and racist mood.
Moreover, discriminative counter-terror policies in recent years are increasing the tension between Muslim migrants in Australia and Australian whites. In 2021, SBS documentary “Is Australia Racist?” showed that in 1998, only 3% Australians kept a negative view to Muslims, it stands at 32% now. Worse still, this kind of bully targets women. In Australia, 77% Muslim women experienced prejudiced racial discrimination in pubic.
Owing to the uniqueness of their religion and tradition, Muslims encounter some difficulty in synchronizing harmoniously with the mainstream in their blending process into modern society. At the meantime, some Islamic features might have been used by some Islamic radical forces, who treat infidels with cruelty in the name of “cleansing” and “Jihad’. Influenced in particular by the 9.11 event, many religious extremists are enormously belligerent. Nevertheless, excessive counterterrorism is not just going against racial harmony, it will prompt constant grievances among Muslim communities, catalyze pre-existing contradictions, generate more acts of terror and will possibly create religious and racial conflicts of big scale in Australia.
